The route to Kerlingarfjöll

Traveling to Kerlingarfjöll is an edge-of-your-seat adventure. When the paved road disappears and you enter the rocky desolation of the highlands, you might feel as if you’ve left planet Earth.

Accessibility

Located in the central highlands, Highland Base and the Kerlingarfjöll mountain range is at an elevation of 700 meters. In the summer it is accessible by car or bus. During the winter, we can only be reached with a 4x4 super jeep driven by a professional.

Distance

The distance from Reykjavík to Kerlingarfjöll is about 200 kilometers and the drive takes around 3.5 hours in normal summer conditions. Keep in mind that conditions in the Icelandic highlands change swiftly, so always check ahead before setting out.

Directions

Directions From Route 1 (Þjóðvegur 1), turn onto Route 35 (Kjalvegur) from Biskupstungnabraut. Continue on Kjalvegur. Drive to F347 in Hrunamannahreppur until you reach Highland Base Kerlingarfjöll.

Getting here

In the summer, you can take on the unpaved highland roads yourself and drive to Highland Base by car, or take a bus so you can sit back and take in the stunning views on the way. During the winter months, the remote trails are left unserviced. To navigate the icy roads, deep snowdrifts, and unpredictable weather, you’ll need a 4x4 super jeep equipped for extreme conditions and a professional driver.

From Reykjavík, the trip takes approximately 3.5 hours, covering nearly 200 kilometer. We offer summer bus transfers or you can drive on your own car.
