Hiking on your own

Safety checklist for summer hikes

Use the Safe Travel app

Download the Safe Travel app to your phone.

Use the Safe Travel app to make a comprehensive travel plan for hiking on your own. You can also notify Highland Base reception about your itinerary.

In addition to the Safe Travel app, you should download the 112 Iceland app, which enables you to contact Iceland’s emergency services without making a call.

It is vital that your device is fully charged. Depending on the duration of your hike, we also recommend that you bring a portable charger.

Check the weather forecast

Check the weather forecast before setting off. If the forecast is bad, it's best to postpone your trip. Keep in mind that mountain weather is notoriously unpredictable and conditions can change rapidly.
